I focus on the inside work, because the external story and mission only hold up if the internal structure can deliver on them.

What I've learned
Four things I now believe.
There's a gap between ambition and readiness.
Many impact-oriented organizations excel at the outward story and struggle to evolve their operations to match. My greatest value is seeing that gap clearly and quickly, and doing the inside work to close it.
Structure can enable, not constrain.
Designed the right way, structure doesn't limit thinking. It enables creative development and steady expansion. Operational strategy should lead to systems that scale without compromising the vision.
Sustainability happens at the ecosystem level.
Organizations that want real impact have to build bridges across seemingly divergent interests and increasingly complex dynamics. That's where I do my best work.
The boldest visions need incremental progress.
Big ambition meets a stepwise approach: build up the systems, structures, and teams that can execute steadily along the path to growth.
The person
Pragmatic, candid, and outdoors whenever possible.
I was raised in the Pacific Northwest by a pair of Dutch immigrants, which no doubt made me both passionate about the environment and deeply pragmatic. I've always been drawn to the greatest opportunities for leverage to make genuine impact.
I'm calm but intense, serious but goofy, with high expectations and a casual style. I never beat around the bush, because for me, honest is authentic. I'm analytically wired and trained to think like a scientist, but I'm driven by compassion for my teams, my family, and the people around me.
